به گفته لانگ لهائو (Long Lehao)، دانشمند ارشد پروژه و از اعضای آکادمی علوم چین (CAS)، این ایستگاه خورشیدی فضایی قادر خواهد بود در یک سال به اندازه کل نفت قابل استخراج از زمین انرژی تولید کند.
وی در سخنرانیای در ماه اکتبر افزود: «این پروژه به اندازهای مهم است که میتوان آن را با انتقال سد سهدره (Three Gorges Dam) به مدار زمینثابت مقایسه کرد.» سد سهدره در حال حاضر بزرگترین نیروگاه برقآبی جهان است و سالانه بیش از ۱۰۰٬۰۰۰ میلیون کیلوواتساعت برق تولید میکند.
چرا فضا؟ رفع چالشهای انرژی خورشیدی زمینی
انرژی خورشیدی در سطح زمین با چالشهایی مانند ابر، شب، و جذب پرتوها توسط جو مواجه است. اما در فضا، شدت تابش خورشید چند برابر بیشتر است. از همین رو دانشمندان از مدتها پیش فناوریهایی تحت عنوان نیروگاه خورشیدی فضایی (SBSP) را پیشنهاد دادهاند تا از انرژی خالص خورشید در خارج از جو استفاده کرده و آن را از طریق پرتوهای مایکروویو یا لیزر به زمین منتقل کنند.
پیشبینی شده که تا سال ۲۰۳۵ ساخت کامل نیروگاه فضایی به پایان برسد.
